Some of the deepest pain in life comes with lessons that truly break us open.

The cage of conditioning—a cage we all know far too well—is built around us slowly, piece by piece, over the course of our lives. It forms through the weight of family expectations, societal norms, cultural pressures, schooling, and often, the imprints of trauma. From the time we are young, we’re taught what is “acceptable” and what is not—how to act, what success is supposed to look like, which emotions are safe to show, and which parts of us are better off buried. We learn, sometimes without even realizing it, that our worth is tied to how well we perform, please, and conform—drifting further and further from the truth of who we really are.

The cage of conditioning fuels the belief that others have something you don’t by training you to distrust yourself and place others on a pedestal. When you’re stuck in this cage, you become hyper-focused on comparison—measuring your life, your choices, and your progress against others. Every time someone seems to have it “figured out,” it reinforces the belief that they must have access to something you’re lacking, whether it’s knowledge, confidence, worth, or luck.

The result? Self-doubt becomes your default. You diminish your own inner knowing and overestimate the wisdom of others. You believe the answer is always “out there,” causing you to chase more books, courses, jobs, or advice—but never quite feel fulfilled.

This belief is the invisible lock on the cage. It keeps you trapped because as long as you believe you’re missing something, you won’t trust your own power to open the door and walk out. ⛓️‍💥

And the key to the cage? Self-trust. Shifting from seeking to remembering, from looking outward to turning inward. YOU’VE held the 🔑 all along.

Unresolved trauma and a dysregulated nervous system are among the top causes of chronic pain and physical symptoms.

Research consistently shows that trauma, particularly early-childhood trauma, has a profound and lasting impact on the nervous system, contributing to a cascade of physical and emotional issues.

The body’s stress response system, when triggered repeatedly or left unhealed, can become overactive, leading to heightened sensitivity to pain, fatigue, muscle tension, and a range of other physical symptoms and conditions including fibromyalgia, migraines, tension headaches, back pain, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

This is not just a “mind over matter” situation; the impact of trauma on the nervous system is a physiological reality that deeply affects the body’s ability to heal and maintain balance.

Healing chronic pain effectively requires more than just addressing the physical symptoms. Focusing solely on the body without considering the emotional and nervous system imbalances may provide temporary or superficial relief, but the underlying trauma and dysregulation remain.

Resisting what we know is good for us— whether it’s rest, nourishment, connection, relationships, a certain decision, or self-care— is a common sign of a dysregulated nervous system.

When our nervous system is dysregulated (stuck in fight, flight, freeze, or fawn), our system prioritizes satety over growth, even if the “unsafe” thing is actually beneficial.

➡️ For example:

* Hypervigilance (Fight/Flight): If your system is stuck in high alert, slowing down might feel threatening because it requires you to sit with emotions or sensations you’ve been avoiding.

* Freeze Response: If you’re shut down, taking action-even for something good—feels IMPOSSIBLE because your body has adapted to a state of conservation and disconnection.

* Fawning: If you’ve been conditioned to prioritize others, self-care and decisions in your best interest (rather than others) may trigger guilt or fear of rejection.

Essentially, the body rejects what is unfamiliar, even if it’s good. The key is learning to co-regulate and gradually introduce safety so your system can receive what it actually needs.

This is where Spinal Energetics holds its power.

When our nervous system is stuck in survival mode, safety is prioritized over growth—even if what feels unsafe or unfavorable is actually healing.

Rest, connection, nourishment, and support can feel threatening when the body is wired for hypervigilance or shutdown.

The key isn’t forcing ourselves to “just do it” but learning to understand our patterns and create felt safety so we can receive what we truly need.

➡️ The resistance to what we know would support our growth and healing may look/sound like:

- “Rest feels uncomfortable and unproductive”
- “I’m beyond help, ‘x’ would never work on me”
- Isolating when you need connection
- Resisting nourishing yourself

This work is a dance between practitioner and client. Co-regulation is also a huge part of it - helping to expand the client’s window of tolerance and provide the context and safety for deeper processing.
As you see in the video, our breath syncs and l often feel in my body what’s moving through the field

Stillness and rest can feel deeply uncomfortable for someone stuck in fight-or-flight because their nervous system has been conditioned to prioritize survival.

In this state, hypervigilance becomes second nature, and relaxation may feel unsafe or even vulnerable, as if letting down their guard.

Rest also creates space for unprocessed emotions and sensations to rise to the surface, which can feel overwhelming or even threatening.

👉To help your nervous system embrace rest, safety must be gently rediscovered through intentional practices that foster regulation and build trust in the experience of stillness.

✨Here’s how to begin finding safety in stillness:

1. Start with Co-Regulation: Practice rest or stillness in the presence of someone you trust- could even be a pet. Feeling safe in the presence of another regulated nervous system helps your own system begin to associate rest with safety.

2. Engage in Trauma-Informed Somatic Work: Spinal Energetics, Reiki, breath work, rhythmic rocking, vagus nerve exercises, etc. These practices help your nervous system experience small doses of rest while maintaining a sense of control and safety.

3. Focus on Building Interoceptive Awareness: Begin noticing internal sensations in small, manageable ways, like feeling the breath in your body or tracking areas of tension and release. Learning to connect with your body’s signals gradually helps reestablish trust in rest as a safe and supportive state.

4. Introduce Stillness Slowly and Gradually: Instead of jumping straight into extended periods of rest, integrate micro-moments of stillness into your day, such as pausing for a few breaths or sitting quietly for one minute. Over time, this can help your nervous system adjust to rest without triggering feelings of vulnerability or danger.

These steps honor your nervous system’s need for safety and gradual adaptation, allowing rest to become a secure and embodied experience 🤍
